Ensuring that your filter fits properly in your HVAC system involves verifying not only the right length and width but also the thickness of your filter. Most standard air filters are 1-2 inches thick, while media filters are generally 3-5 inches thick. The best way to measure your air filter size is to use a measuring tape, and the dimensions of your current filter are likely printed on the frame.

Nominal Size vs. Actual Size: The nominal size is a shorthand number rounded to the nearest whole or half inch, normally in a larger font (ex: 20 x 20 x 1). Whereas the actual size is an exact measurement, normally in a smaller font, that depicts the filter's precise dimensions (ex: 19.75 x 19.75 x 0.75). All filters have both.

Measuring Your Air Filters: If your current air filter does not have a dimension listed on the frame, use a tape measure to record the length x width x depth to find the actual size. Then round these measurements up to the nearest inch to find a corresponding nominal size, which will be easier to locate when searching online.
